Project Engineer

Job description

• Technical project management of the design, construction and commissioning of experimental apparatus for the accelerator’s beamlines.
• The successful candidate will be responsible for planning all aspects of interfacing new experimental apparatus with the cyclotron’s beamlines.
• After a suitable training period the candidate is expected (for up to 50% of their time) to provide experimental support during irradiations that can also fall outside of normal office hours.
• The candidate will interact with the accelerator’s customers and researchers by providing assistance setting up experiments and providing support with the control software used for controlling the ion beam and sample stage during an irradiation.
• The successful candidate will have to successfully complete the Dutch radiation safety (toezicht houdend medewerker stralingsbescherming) course within the first year of appointment unless the candidate already possesses such a certificate.

Working environment

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen (UG) are joining forces in proton therapy R&D with the aim to create a world-class research program within the UMCG cancer research center. The AGOR-accelerator facility is a key infrastructure for the radiation biology and radiation physics research in this program. Its research capabilities are currently being expanded with a new infrastructure for image guided pre-clinical radiation biology research. The accelerator facility consists of the superconducting cyclotron that delivers beams of ions ranging from protons to bismuth with a variable energy to several experimental stations dedicated to specific types of experiments. The accelerator provides beams not only for medical research but also for research in subatomic physics and, on a commercial basis, for radiation hardness testing of electronic components and sensors. Our technical support team’s focus is to meet the current and future requirements of the local, national and international user community that depends on the accelerator and the associated experimental infrastructure for their research.

We are now searching for a Project Engineer (1.0 fte) who will help with design and construction of equipment and expanding the experimental capabilities at our cyclotron facility. The candidate is expected to work closely with scientific staff to help them to successfully realize all the technical aspects of their research projects. The candidate will also provide support for irradiations performed at our facility.

Qualifications

• HBO in Mechatronics, Applied Physics or a related field with at least 3 years relevant experience.
• Team player; good communication skills, also with non-experts; flexible.
• Well-developed problem-solving skills; stress resistant.
• Ability to speak and write at (at least) the B1 level in English mandatory (some of the customers and experimenters will be foreign).
• Willingness to work night shifts for some irradiations.
• Knowledge of/experience in: project management, electronics design, mechanical design.

Highly desirable (but not required) knowledge of/experience in:

• Vacuum technology, ion beam technology, radiation detection.
• Experience with strong (superconducting) magnets.
• Dutch radiation safety course certificate.

Conditions of employment

Your salary will be a maximum of € 4.615,- gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC). The employment basis is a temporary contract for one year with a possible extension with max. 3 years.
