Postdoctoral researcher position in radionuclide therapy

Project information

We will investigate the application, translation and radiobiology of a novel radionuclide therapy agent, targeting the DNA damage repair protein PARP; and other radiolabelled PARP inhibitors for imaging and radionuclide therapy of cancer.

We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher (up to three years), to pursue this project, together with two PhD students (TBA) under the guidance of dr. Bart Cornelissen. You will perform in vitro and preclinical in vivo experiments to elucidate the scope and molecular biology of a novel radionuclide therapy agent. You will assist in the development of novel radionuclide therapy agents. The intended start date is 1st of September 2022.

What do we ask

• You will perform research into the molecular biology and radiobiology of a novel radionuclide therapy agent, and assist with the development of novel radionuclide therapy agents.
• Generate high quality data and reports suitable for publication and for submission in the context of grant proposals.
• To coordinate experiments with technical staff.
• To assist with the supervision of students.
• Participate and contribute to group discussions and meetings including the presentation of own or published data.
• Present results in oral and written form, and discuss scientific findings at national and international meetings.
• Inform the Group Head and other team members about progress or difficulties in research projects or services.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding research data when interacting with non-collaborating researchers.
• Contribute as appropriate in the preparation of manuscripts for peer-review and publication in scientific journals.
• Keep up to date with developments in radiobiology, theragnostics, molecular imaging, and in other topics related to the research activities of the Institute.
• Participate in the education and training of other staff as necessary and appropriate.
• To act at all times in the interests of the Institute to ensure good laboratory practice.
• To be accountable for their own professional conduct within the group.
• To ensure that work in the laboratory is conducted safely and, in particular, persons undertaking the work do so using appropriate safety procedures and in the dedicated areas.
• To undertake duties as may be required from time to time that are commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.

Working environment

You will be appointed at the department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, part of the Medical Imaging Center of the University Medical Center Groningen, with the bulk of the work to be performed at the UMCG main campus. Close collaboration is envisioned with the departments of Oncology, Radiotherapy, Chemistry and Molecular oncology at UMCG, and the departments of Oncology and Chemistry at the University of Oxford.

What do we need

Essential selection criteria

• You have a PhD, or are working towards finalizing one, in a relevant discipline (e.g. molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biomedical sciences) with a strong interest in cancer biology, molecular biology, radiobiology, radionuclide therapy, and/or imaging.
• Willing to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, with a high degree of cross training.
• Willing to work with radionuclides.
• A keen interest in cancer research.
• Strong experimental skills and a demonstrated ability to design and carry out laboratory studies using a range of biomedical imaging techniques.
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to evaluate and interpret scientific data.
• Ability, skills and confidence to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
• Experience of working unsupervised under own initiative on a day to day basis.
• Highly motivated, enthusiastic individual.
• This is a lab-based post, and cannot be performed remotely.

Desirable selection criteria

• Experience of immunohistochemistry, western blot, flow cytometry or confocal microscopy.
• Experience of radiobiology.
• Experience of RNAseq, siRNA, or CRISPR.
• Experience of working with radioisotopes.
• Evidence of preclinical experimental in vivo skills, art. 9 license holder or FELASA equivalent.
• Experience of preclinical in vivo experimentation, especially imaging or cancer models.
• Experience of nuclear medicine imaging.
• First author on a publication in a peer reviewed research journal.
• Evidence of presentation at national and international meetings.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

What do we offer

The successful candidate will be able to develop their research skills within highly experienced and internationally recognized research groups. It concerns a full-time (36 hours a week) position in an enthusiastic team with dedicated researchers. You will receive a contract for one year with the possibility of a two year extension. Your salary will be a maximum of € 4.707 gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
