PhD student for EUCAN-connect project

Job description

The EUCAN-connect project is looking for a talented, curiosity-driven PhD student with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. EUCAN-connect is a large EU funded international project focused on investigation of the effect of several factors that influence long-term future health outcomes in mothers and babies.

The topic of the PhD project is the associations of events during pregnancy and birth and maternal and children’s health outcomes. Worldwide spontaneous vaginal birth rates are decreasing, while cesarean section and other medical birth interventions are increasing in healthy pregnant women. Emerging evidence suggests that birth interventions may have an effect on both maternal and child health. Therefore, the aim of this project is to examine the association between exposures during pregnancy and birth and maternal and childhealth. With pooled EUCAN-Connect cohort data we will examine associations between courses of pregnancy (complications) and birth (interventions) and maternal health (e.g. menstrual problems, menopausal complaints) and child health (i.e. metabolic diseases and infections). In the analyses different individual characteristics (i.e. socio economic status) and different international maternal healthcare systems will be incorporated.

Working environment

This project is a collaboration project between the UMCG department of Genetics (Prof. Morris Swertz) and the department of Midwifery Science which is located at Amsterdam UMC and UMCG (Prof. Ank de Jonge/Dr. Lilian Peters). Thereforeyou will be get a job contract from both institutions for 0.5 FTE/ 4 years. The primary working environment will be located at the UMCG.

Job requirements

• MSc. degree in epidemiology, bioinformatics, statistics or a comparable discipline.
• Experience with statistics and epidemiology, biology or biochemistry.
• Demonstrated competences working with R.
• Having a great interest in midwifery, maternity care and women’s health.
• Candidates who have BSc/MSc degree in midwifery are encouraged to apply.
• Good organizational and communication skills, being a team-player.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Fluency in English.

The UMCG and Amsterdam UMC have a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.

Conditions of employment

A PhD position for a period of 4 years. The appointment will be at both institutions of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc). Your salary will be a minimum of € 2.495,- gross per month in the first year and a maximum of € 3.196,- (scale PhD) in the final (4th) year, based on a full-time appointment.
